1. Unity Games and Google Play Closed Testing

Unity is the world's most popular game engine, powering over 70% of mobile games. But when it comes to publishing on Google Play, Unity games face the exact same Closed Testing requirement as any other Android app. Since November 2023, new personal developer accounts must complete 14 days of testing with 12 real testers before reaching production.

Games present unique challenges for closed testing: they require more engagement than utility apps, testers need to actually play (not just open the app), and session quality matters more than for simpler apps. Google's reviewers understand this and evaluate game testing accordingly.

Key takeaway

Unity games follow the same Play Console rules as all Android apps. The 12-tester, 14-day requirement applies identically — but engagement expectations are higher for games.

2. Does the 12-Tester Requirement Apply to Unity Games?

Yes — if your Play Console account is a personal developer account created after November 13, 2023. This affects the vast majority of indie game developers and solo creators using Unity Personal or Unity Pro under a personal account. Organization accounts with a D-U-N-S number and accounts created before November 2023 are exempt.

Many game developers are caught off guard because they assume game publishing is different from app publishing. It is not. Google Play treats both identically under the same developer policies.

3. Building Your Unity Game AAB for Google Play

Unity AAB export checklist:

  1. Go to File → Build Settings → Android → Switch Platform
  2. Enable Build App Bundle (Google Play) — this generates AAB instead of APK
  3. Under Player Settings → Publishing Settings, configure your keystore for signing
  4. Set Target API Level to 34+ (required by Google Play as of August 2025)
  5. Set Scripting Backend to IL2CPP (required for 64-bit compliance on ARM64 devices)
  6. Enable ARM64 under Target Architectures
  7. Build and upload the resulting .aab to Play Console

Unity game tip

Google Play restricts AAB size to 200MB (expandable to 2GB with Play Asset Delivery). If your Unity game exceeds this, use Addressables or split asset bundles via Play Asset Delivery.

4. Unity-Specific Play Console Setup

When setting up your store listing for a Unity game, pay extra attention to the Content Rating questionnaire — games often trigger additional questions about violence, gambling, or user interaction. Be honest: misrepresenting your game's content can lead to rejection or suspension. Also ensure your privacy policy covers any analytics SDKs (Unity Analytics, GameAnalytics, Firebase) your game uses.

5. Getting 12 Testers for Your Unity Game

Game testers are easier to recruit than app testers because playing a game is inherently more engaging. Post in r/Unity3D, r/Unity2D, r/indiegames, and r/playmygame. The Unity Discord server and game dev forums are also active. TesterBee provides 12 verified game testers who actively play your game for 14 days — including feedback on gameplay, bugs, and user experience.

6. 14-Day Testing for Games

Game testing requires higher engagement than app testing. Testers should play your game for at least 5-10 minutes per session, across multiple sessions during the 14 days. Google looks for session length consistency — a spike on day 1 followed by zero activity for 13 days is a rejection signal. Push at least one gameplay update or balance patch during the testing period to show you are iterating on tester feedback.

7. Production Access for Unity Games

After 14 days of active testing, apply for production access and answer the required questionnaire. Emphasize tester engagement metrics, gameplay feedback you received, and changes you made. Mention specific tester comments about game mechanics, difficulty balance, or bugs. Google wants to see that real players tested your game and that you improved it based on their input.

8. Common Unity Build Issues and Fixes

IL2CPP build fails on large projects

Clean the Library folder and rebuild. For very large projects, increase the incremental GC threshold and ensure sufficient RAM during the build.

AAB exceeds 200MB size limit

Use Play Asset Delivery to split assets into install-time, fast-follow, and on-demand packs. Large textures and audio files are the usual culprits.

ARM64 not enabled

Required for all new apps and updates since August 2021. Enable under Player Settings → Other Settings → Target Architectures → ARM64.

Plugin compatibility issues

Some Unity Store plugins are not updated for ARM64 or target API 34+. Check each plugin before building.
